Creating Twitter Community on Your Website

One of Twitter’s compelling aspects is the creation of applications which continue to propel community building.

Mashable’s Adam Ostrow in his post titled Tweetizen: Create Instant Twitter Community on Your Website points out the benefit of filtering tweets and displaying them in groups. The highlight though is the ability to embed a widget on one’s website.

I had an opportunity to witness the use of such an application tool while attending the Inbound Marketing Summit in San Francisco a few weeks ago.

Admittedly, I do not know which tool the IMS folks used, but their website displayed a Twitter based feed. The feed had contributions of the summit attendees who were using the summit suggested hashtag symbol, i.e. #ims09.

Here’s a link to see the event’s  photo and Twitter stream.

It became clear to me that people who were unable to attend could still be part of the community by following the stream. Better yet, it is easy to imagine tweeps (people on Twitter) generating more online conversation. Imagine sitting in your New England summer cottage, wi-fi equipped laptop on the kitchen table while you follow compelling thought leaders from across the country. Visualize tweeting a SF based attendee in response to their tweet and prompting him/her to ask the presenter a question!

As someone who came from the corporate world ( ’79-’07), it is exciting to still be “wow’d” by something.

Having the day end with learning, networking, community building and “wow” moments makes it easier to want to have tomorrow come.
