“Being Laid Off : When Do You Tell Your Loved Ones?”

I was enjoying my morning coffee and bagel in Oakland’s Laurel District’s “World Ground Cafe” and it was very sobering to read the New York Times’ “Breaking Financial Bad News to the Children” article.

It snapped me back to February 2007,  when my employer of 28 years presented me a choice of staying or leaving.  I doubt any of us are really prepared for that moment, and if there is any solace, I suspect that it is less of stigma than just a few years ago.

The Times author notes some individuals elect not telling their children for fear of feeling diminished. She lets us take a glimpse into their family story around her spouse being let go.

How have you elected to handle such an unfortuate event?
