The Path of Child’s Artwork to Blogging

A few weeks ago I had the exciting opportunity to present the topic “How To Use Blogging for the Job Search” at Job Connections in Danville, CA. It was my second time speaking before the group, and I vividly recall being stunned during my initial March 2008 presentation that 125 plus people would devote three to four hours of a Saturday to learn and network.

Equally surprising was how a second grade art project would help me convince the primarily Baby Boomer, professional gathering of the merits in blogging to help them in the job search.  As I was walking to the meeting location’s bathroom I noticed a hallway art board tacked with individual students’ profiles of facial photo, name, parent’s name, pet’s name, likes, dislikes and fears.

Presto!

A blog!

A diary of one’s life!

Thus a prop was created and I launched my presentation by displaying a child’s artwork being the metaphor type basis of a blog.

Eyes wide open!

Mouths agape!

How can this be a blog they queried?

Time ticked by and folks began to appreciate that they each had professional stories and expertise to tell.  More importantly, they grasped how one can search by keyword in Google’s Blog Search or Technorati the professional interest of choice.

Thus, they began to comprehend the power of social networking, “Finding Your Tribe”, as a way to be seen and to find others of similar professional interest.

Dolly Penland, Staff Writer of the Jacksonville Business Journal succinctly pens this point of view in her blog post “Blogs Can Establish Expertise to New Clients”

Yes, even a child can blog. Thanks for the inspiration Carlos in continuing your commitment to be Forever Young.

  2. I guess I never thought about blogging in terms of a job search. Not being in the market for a job probably has something to do with that. But I do have two boomer friends who are not yet ready to step out and do something on there own and are looking for employment in their field of expertise. I will direct them here. Perhaps they will be inspired.

  3. Hi Susan,

It took me years to gather the courage and step away from a 28 year corporate career!

Our current economic environment may be the propellant for your Boomer friends to seek meaningful work driven by their vision and passion!

I doubt they will continue to find it in a corporate environment.
