First Page Placement & Politics

Just heard a story on the radio about candidates and campaign. They are trying to figure out how to deal with with negative rumors (Swift Boat in 2008). The strategy is managing first page placement on search engines. Have enough pages, articles, and blog posts on the candidate’s website or a related site, that addresses the story or rumor. The pages either refute the story or spin it positively. Campaign marketers figure when a voter googles the story they will see all proper on message page. They also don’t think that people won’t look past the first page to see more web listing that might deal with the story unfavorably. One quote was “the [on message] response becomes the story.” The lesson? You can’t control information but you can control first page placement…
